LPG Safety
Master Compliance, Master SAFETY!

Safety is our core value

LPG Safety Compliance is not only our commitment to all employees, partners, and customers, but it is also embedded in our core values, guiding our performance and motivating our pursuit of leadership in the LPG industry.

In addition to adhering strictly to LPG safety standards set by Shell and Government agencies, we organize periodic LPG safety training seminars to equip our partners and customers with knowledge and awareness associated with LPG safety.

At NHIEN LIEU XANH, we’ve adopted a 3Ps Safety Culture and a ZERO Accident framework to ensure our focus on both Personal Safety and Process Safety. Our adherence to these stringent safety measures has resulted in ZERO ACCIDENTS since the inception of the company in 2010.

Hazardous and extremely flammable

LPG is a colorless, odorless, and non-corrosive liquid (hydrocarbon fuel) that readily evaporates into a gas. Odourants, such as ethyl mercaptan, are added to help detect gas leakage.

Classified as highly flammable, LPG is typically stored and distributed as a liquid to be used for LPG heating, cooking, and for vehicles.

Exposure to high concentrations of LPG gas can lead to varying degrees of symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, and nausea.

Three factors are required in proper combination for fire and explosive combustion to take place:

  • Fuel-gas to burn
  • Air to supply oxygen
  • Ignition source to start and continue the combustion process In which fuels and Ignition sources are controllable

Precautions

  • Do not store or use bottles in the horizontal position. A leak could be very serious and liquid could enter gas lines
  • Do not drop bottles off vehicles or platforms, as damage to bottles and valves can be caused.
  • Always display safety and operating notices prominently.
  • Don't change or store bottles in the presence of naked flames.
  • Trace leaks using liquid detergent solution, NEVER a naked flame.
  • Never store or use below ground level, as any leakage will collect at low levels. Storage should be well ventilated.
  • Don't use tools to operate bottle valves.
  • Due to their higher pressure, propane bottles should not be used indoors for domestic appliances.
  • Always close safety caps when the bottle is empty or not in use.
  • Check hoses regularly, ensure properly secured with hose clips. If hoses are damaged or showing signs of wear, replace them (using hose that is qualified).

Important!

To make sure the cylinder is safe to use, you should check its tested date. The tested date is printed on the handle: TESTED month - year. For example, the label printed: TESTED 6 - 2012, which means this cylinder is tested in June 2012 and can be used within 5 years to June 2017. After that time, this cylinder is no longer safe to use and is required to be reinspected.

Be prepared

  • Review and assess potential risks existing in client's gas storage area before installation and during operation, then propose proactive plans for each unique situation.
  • Suggest process of handling when incidents occur, for both usual gas leaks and burning leaks.
  • Fire prevention and basic instructions for LPG consumer's intenral fire prevention units.
  • Assist involved fire prevention and extinguishing authorities.
  • Minimize the consequences of any accident, recover as much as possible the original conditions of the operation system.
Liquid when stored in cylinder under high pressure and vapor under normal outside conditions. Odor Addictives are added to create odorants
Boiling point Under -1°C Ignition temperature Under -40°C
Vapor Pressure About 790 kPa at 40°C Lower explosive limit 1.8% in the air
Density About 0.55 kPa at 15°C Under explosive limit 10% in the air
Vapor density About 1.85 at 15°C Autoignition temperature Higher than 410°C

Symptoms

  • In case of Carbon monoxide poisoning, the symptoms are drowsiness and headache, in extreme cases, a tendency to stagger and nausea, faint and even death.

First aid treatment for inhalation poisoning

  • Remove the victim out of gas leaking area and to fresh air immediately, obtain immediate medical assistance.
  • Keep warm and let the victim relax. If the person is panic, use physical assistance method to avoid self-hurting.
  • If the victim faints but still breathes stably, help the person stay in the right position.
  • If breathing is inadequate or stops, start mouth to mouth resusciatation.

First aid treatment for skin

  • If the poison has spilled on the person's clothes, remove the clothing and flush the skin with water, however, do not try to remove it if it sticks to the skin. Dress the wound carefully. Do not use burn ointment or powder.
  • Remember that clothing is flammable, make it wet before moving to another place. Wash it before using it again.

First aid treatment for eyes

  • Clean the eye with water immediately. Dress them carefully. Obtain immediate medical assistance.

Immediately

  • Pull the nearest fire alarm if it has not already been activated, and call fire fighting services, dial 114
  • Immediately evacuate the building, following the exit signs or your evacuation route, except for those necessary to deal with the emergency.
  • Always approach the fire or leak from upwind and ONLY if safe to do so.

In case of a leak without fire

  • Isolate the leaking cylinder(s) and if possible, locate the source of the leak and stop it.
  • If the leak cannot be stopped, then move the cylinder(s) to an isolated area (i.e. clear of people, buildings). The point of leakage should be kept uppermost.

In case of a leak with fire

  • A small fire from a bottle may be smothered with a wet cloth or dry powder extinguisher, ONLY if it is possible to stop the leak.
  • If the leaked cynlider(s) cannot be moved to a safe place, cool the adjacent cylinder(s) with water.
  • Always approach any fire or leak from upwind and using all protection available.
  • It is best to control the fires and not to extinguish them until the ignition sources are all cut off.
